The last day is a busy one. We all drive across town together to pick up some paper, somewhere else to see if a delivery of pencils has arrived (it had not), somewhere else for socks, and one more place for a power strip. There is so much to do and so little time. It would be easy to drop the kids with the nanny and run the errands, just the two of us. But in the end we do them all together. Like every moment might be important. It is not exactly quality time, but we are together. It is what it is. Just life.
We buy a rudimentary picnic and spend a mellow hour together at Cherry Beach. We watch the people at the dog park laughing at the owners who look like their mutts. We walk to the pirate ship play structure, my wife and I sitting on a bench holding hands while the kids play.
