Guardian releases picture of mangled computer as reports say David Cameron ordered his cabinet secretary to oversee destruction
The Guardian has released images of a mangled computer hacked to pieces in the newspaper’s basement under the supervision of British secret agents as it was revealed the “shadowy figure” that demanded the destruction was sent by U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron.
The Apple laptop containing documents leaked by Edward Snowden was destroyed in order to insulate the former American intelligence worker from potential prosecution and to keep reporting on his leaks, the newspaper said.
The Guardian said senior staffers shattered the electronics using angle grinders and drills in mid-July in a bid to avoid legal action or even a police raid that could halt its reporting or provide evidence for U.S. officials seeking to put Snowden behind bars.
